Flash Video

Flash video is like having a video inside a box, which has buttons for playing, stopping, pausing, volume, fast forward and rewind. This is a great idea, but also a great problem. Some Flash type videos are in boxes where the buttons are not labeled for the screen reader. Sometimes you hear "button one, button two," and so on, and sometimes you hear nothing at all. The Flash Player below has been set up with a "Play/Pause, Duration Indicator, and a Volume button. None of these buttons are tagged, therefore, you will have great trouble finding and using them. This is one case where you will possibly need to get sighted assistance, and maybe use your screen reader to label the buttons. Although Flash Players are becoming more accessible, the following is very common, and something you need to learn to work through. If you can find the buttons, you might try remembering which buttons do what action, but that may not be consistent between different Flash Players. Experiment with this example to determine if there is a way to make it work for you. In one experiment it was found that JAWS screen reader would read the buttons on the following Flash Player, if Internet Explorer was used. When Mozilla Firefox was tried, the buttons would not read. NVDA would not read the buttons in either web browser. At the end of this page is a button titled "BACK" that will take you back to the "Internet Lessons" web page.
